In their research, the authors have tried to answer the following questions: what will Japan’s foreign policy be like in a new system of international relations after the end of the cold war; how painful will the process of Japan’s gradual transition be from its pacifist policy in the second half of the XX century to a ‘normal state’ policy with a strong modern army and navy; what will the most important traits of Japan’s new foreign policy model be and what instruments will help the governing circles implement their new course in the system of international relations of XXI century.

The authors have: done an inventory check of Japan’s international relations at the start of XXI century, studied the particularities of the formation of its foreign policy in a new world order, defined what the main global players can expect from Japan in the near future, and what Japan itself can expect to receive from the global community in return.

The book is of interest both to Orientalist scholars and to a wide circle of readers interested in the topic of modern Japan.
